Coach Laura Mitchell founded Sports Dreammakers Inc. because she was one of those student-athletes who could have used the Map of Your Future and other guidance to get to the college level to play sports. She believes every student athlete should try to play sports in college. A college basketball player, sprinter and hurdler in high school and colleges in Texas and Florida, Mitchell was a Dean's List and President's List student and has been an avid competitor throughout her sports career. Mitchell was a nationally ranked rebounder in college and broke a school record for rebounding. She is still active in sports and recently won the Top Gun Championship at the NBA Hoop-it-Up in Oakland/San Jose.
Mitchell knows some teenagers may not believe in themselves enough to say: I will play sports in college. But Mitchell has an uncanny knack for connecting with teenage athletes and for helping them understand their many opportunities. Once they understand the possibilities Mitchell leads them to the steps to reach their dreams.
Mitchell's concept started the foundation for a ground breaking program in Mississippi. Mitchell was a lead partner in the creation and implementation of the Cellular South Gameplan. Cellular South, the nation's largest privately held wireless company funded this statewide initiative to inform, inspire, and educate the students in Mississippi's high schools. The Cellular South Gameplan was implemented for tens of thousands of student-athletes starting in January 2007. With the ideas and three year plan from Sports Dreammakers, this program will go through several stages of growth and evolve through new technology and new components.
Mitchell has been a successful high school coach for teams in Michigan and California, and also coached club basketball for the Santa Cruz Quakes girls club basketball team. Mitchell was an NCAA Head Basketball Coach in Texas and California and served on the NCAA Basketball Championship Committee while a Head Coach. Additionally, Mitchell worked for the University of California in admissions and outreach. Coach Mitchell has spoken about playing sports in college, NCAA eligibility, and reaching the dream of playing college sports for groups of people numbering 2 to 1,500.
Mitchell left behind her graduate studies in law and public policy at Pepperdine in Malibu, CA to follow her own motto and "Do What She Dreams" so that young athletes may too, Do What They Dream.
Mitchell is a nationally known student-athlete specialist and a college sports counselor. She currently runs Sports Dreammakers Inc. and the Bliss Avenue Sports Foundation. In two seasons as the Head Girls' Basketball Coach at Malibu High School, she helped the team earn its first-ever two playoff berths and the two best seasons for girls basketball in Malibu High School history. Mitchell's purpose for founding Sports Dreammakers Inc. and the Bliss Avenue Sports Foundation was to help young athletes embrace their magnificence and reach their dreams of participating in college sports.
